Her challah is eggy, fluffy, golden, and braided into a gorgeous circle loaf that rests in the center of the dining room table. It would lay there as everyone arrived for dinner, the smell of brisket and kugel wafting through the air while familial laughter and arguments flowed through the house. Then we would sit down, say the blessings, and tear that delicious, every-single-bite-worth-the-carbs halo of goodness to shreds after which it would be gone for another year and I’d be left with only store-bought — the love, the tradition, and the memories missing. I wanted to fix that in the only way I knew how.
