When used with smaller HP air compressors and wired directly to the electric motor (Line Voltage Control) the pressure switch monitors the air pressure in the compressor tank. It closes its electrical contacts to start the compressor when the pressure drops below a preset cut-in level and opens the contacts to stop the compressor when the pressure reaches the cut-out level. For larger Industrial Grade air compressors, the pressure switch works in conjunction with a magnetic motor starter, integrated into the compressor’s control circuit (Low Voltage Control) to act as a pilot device for managing motor operation efficiently. When the tank pressure falls below the cut-in setting, the pressure switch closes its contacts, completing the control circuit and sending a low-voltage signal to energize the magnetic starter’s coil, initiating compressor operation. Compressors without built-in head unloaders may require a pressure switch equipped with an unloader valve. When the pressure switch opens to halt the compressor, the unloader valve vents trapped pressure from the pump head, ensuring the motor restarts without load in the next cycle. These unloader valves typically connect via an air line to the check valve located at or near the receiver tank inlet. If your compressor has built in head unloaders, simply leave the pressure switch unloader disconnected at all times, and the pressure switch will function as normal. The 69JF Hubbell pressure switch features a rotating unloader that can be mounted on the front or either side of the switch and adjusted to any of eight positions. This flexibility allows users to configure the switch to match the compressor system’s layout, eliminating the need to modify the system for a fixed unloader position. The 4-port manifold enables simultaneous connection of multiple components—such as safety valves, gauges, and fittings—minimizing the need for external piping or additional hardware, streamlining the system design.
